The Consortium
Through ongoing promotion and outreach, using a range of communication and marketing initiatives, the Consortium is committed to making Bivongi DOC wine known and appreciated in all its expressions.
The Consortium plans growth and the actions required for the proper management of the denomination, in line with the needs of production and the market.
In the interests of producers and to protect consumers, the Consortium carries out monitoring activities at every stage of production and marketing.
The work of the Consortium and its producers ensures the greatest transparency in the production and market of Bivongi DOC. Every day, different professionals work on events, institutional relations, fraud prevention and digital communication.
The Consortium’s mission
In 2018, the Bivongi DOC Consortium was founded out of the wish of local wineries to work together to protect and promote the territory’s wine-growing heritage.
In March 2021, the Consortium was officially recognised by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies and authorised to operate erga omnes, helping regulate and enhance production quality while ensuring greater transparency for non-member companies as well.
The Consortium embraces an area with a long wine-growing tradition, dating back to Magna Graecia, when Hellenic influences were particularly strong along Calabria’s Ionian coast and shaped the lives and culture of local communities.
The practices brought by the Greeks included vine cultivation and winemaking, whose wines were considered among the finest in the Mediterranean.
Over the course of history, other cultures refined winemaking around Bivongi, above all the Basilian monks, who retreated inland to escape persecution and brought with them agricultural and food-and-wine knowledge. Greek influence, however, has most deeply shaped local society: Hellenic religious and cultural rites remain alive, and the Greek language is still spoken among the area’s elderly residents.
Today, the Consortium is the point of reference for the denomination’s protection, enhancement, information and promotion activities.
Protection and enhancement
Protecting and enhancing Bivongi DOC production are the foundations of the Consortium’s work.
The Consortium protects the denomination, promotes its value, informs consumers and safeguards its interests locally, across Italy and abroad.
Promotion and growth
Through communication and marketing initiatives, the Consortium helps Bivongi DOC wine become known and appreciated in all its expressions.
It also plans the actions needed for the correct management of the denomination, in line with production and market needs.
Guarantee and transparency
In the interests of producers and consumers, the Consortium monitors every stage of production and marketing.
Daily work includes organising events, institutional relations, fraud prevention and digital communication.
The production specification
The production specification also permits, within the established limits, other black grape varieties authorised for Calabria, together with a proportion of white grape varieties. This composition contributes to the richness and variety of expressions found in Bivongi Rosso and Rosato.
For Bivongi Bianco, Greco bianco, Guardavalle and Mantonico bianco are used alongside Malvasia bianca and Ansonica. Here too, the specification establishes precise proportions among the grape-variety groups and permits other authorised white grape varieties within the stated percentages.
It is this variety that allows Bivongi to take shape in different wines, in which each winery can enhance the characteristics of the grapes it uses and interpret in its own way the relationship between grapes, territory and winemaking.
The specification therefore does not define a single sensory profile for Bivongi; it sets the identity and boundaries of the denomination, protecting the link between the wines and their production area. Within these rules, the range of grape varieties and winemaking techniques leaves room for different interpretations, united by their origin in Ionian Calabria.
